Gitte Ådahl and her 'Rolls Royce’ of pelargoniums, the Zonartics
A story of passion, research, and time
Gitte Ådahl is a Swedish pelargonium hybridizer, known and appreciated for her work in selecting and creating unique varieties.
After a long life spent in Italy, Gitte returned to Sweden. It was there that she fell deeply in love with the Pelargonium genus, beginning to cultivate it purely out of passion, observing its forms, colors, and behaviors over time.
The discovery of Zonartics
Her curiosity and desire to delve deeper led her to discover Zonartics, a particular category of pelargonium created by the Australian hybridizer Cliff Blackman.
In the early 2010s, Zonartics were still extremely rare in Europe.
This led to a natural but courageous choice: if she wanted new varieties, she would have to create them herself.
Hybridization as a journey
Having learned the art of hybridization, Gitte began to cross, observe, and select.
Each plant born from seed was carefully evaluated, over time, season after season.
To name her creations, she chose the prefix “Cara,” an Italian word she remained fond of, followed by evocative names, often suggested by the plant itself.
Zonartic: the "Rolls Royce" of pelargoniums
Over the past 13 years, Gitte Ådahl has created increasingly surprising zonal pelargoniums, stellar pelargoniums, and especially Zonartics.
The latter, which she herself calls “the Rolls Royce of pelargoniums,” have little in common with more common pelargoniums: they are seductive plants, sometimes capricious, that bloom for limited periods but with high-impact flowers, capable of leaving a lasting impression.
Color, form, character
Gitte's love for color is clearly reflected in her creations:
🌸 intense chromatic palettes
🌸 unusual forms
🌸 single or double flowers that resemble small rose bouquets
Each variety has a well-defined character, designed for those who love to observe and get to know plants over time.
A rigorously built collection
Today, her collection comprises about 400 varieties, many of which are a direct result of her hybridization work.
Only plants that meet her strict criteria for health, robustness, and balance are offered to enthusiasts.
This is not about mass production, but a careful selection, built over the years.
