Stellar Geraniums: the "bubbly" side of zonals
A pelargonium that breaks the mold
If you think you already know all types of geraniums, Stellar geraniums might surprise you.
Also called stellars or fireworks, they belong to the zonal pelargonium family, but they stand out for shapes and colors that are completely out of the ordinary.
These plants are designed for those looking for something different: more dynamic, more expressive, more original.
Star-shaped leaves, flowers like fireworks
The first thing you notice about Stellar geraniums is the shape of their leaves:
pentalobate, similar to a star or a small open hand.
But it's during flowering that they truly show their character:
- elongated and slender petals
- slightly serrated edges
- light, almost "dishevelled" appearance
- vibrant and contrasting colors
The result is a flower reminiscent of a small natural fireworks display, from which the name fireworks derives.
A discovery born by chance
Stellar geraniums originated in the 1950s from a spontaneous mutation of a zonal pelargonium.
The original plant was noticed almost by chance by a grower during a hotel stay: a shape completely different from anything known until then.
Then, Australian hybridizer Ted Both recognized its potential, selecting and propagating the original plant (known by names such as 'Chinese Cactus', 'Fiery Chief' and 'Sunstar').
From there, a new line of pelargoniums with unique characteristics was born, which spread to Europe and America starting in the 1970s.
Long flowering and great adaptability
Stellar geraniums are cultivated like classic zonals, but with some qualities that make them particularly interesting:
- they start flowering early in spring
- they continue for a long time during the season
- in favorable conditions, they can flower for very extended periods
They are therefore ideal for those who want a plant that is:
- resistant
- generous in flowering
- spectacular but easy to manage
Cultivation: what to know
From a cultivation perspective, Stellar geraniums do not require special attention compared to other zonal pelargoniums.
Any difficulties are the same typical of this family, making them suitable even for those with minimal experience with geraniums.
Why choose a Stellar geranium
Stellar geraniums are perfect for those looking for:
- an original and unconventional plant
- unusual shapes
- vibrant and dynamic blooms
- a strong but balanced decorative presence
