Lycoris radiata
Lycoris radiata

This vigorous plant begins its vegetative cycle with the emission of flower stems in late summer or early autumn, with scarlet red flowers gathered in umbel inflorescences. The stamens and pistil are longer than the tepals.
The ribbon-like leaves, green with glaucous reflections, develop slowly after flowering and will dry only in late spring. Even if dormant, the roots of Lycoris remain alive throughout the summer, allowing the prompt emission of the flowering stem after the first September rains. The bulbs, similar to those of daffodils, must be planted in well-drained soil and where they do not compete with perennials or small plants. Lycoris radiata does not like transplanting and prefers to be left undisturbed to flower at its best.
I grow potted plants where it is possible that flowering will occur in the same year as planting. Although the best results are to be expected after the second year from planting.
It prefers to be grown in open ground, in pots it rarely reaches flowering.
